How to use AI to write a cover letter that still sounds like you

6 min read

Give the AI your real material, not a blank prompt: the full job description, your resume, and one story only you could tell. Let it draft the structure. Then edit: cut every line that could fit any applicant, replace adjectives with specifics, delete anything you did not do, and read it aloud until it sounds like you.

Is it okay to use AI to write a cover letter?

As a drafting partner, yes. A letter is judged on whether it is specific and true, not on what you typed it into. The problem readers notice is not AI. It is generic, and AI is very good at generic when it is given little to work with.

Two rules hold either way. If an application asks whether you used AI, answer honestly. And every sentence has to be true, because the person who reads the letter will ask you about it in the interview.

Why do AI cover letters sound generic?

When a model does not know you, it fills the gaps with the average cover letter. You can spot those lines at a glance, and so can a hiring manager who reads fifty letters a week:

  • "I am thrilled to apply for this exciting opportunity"
  • "I am passionate about" anything, with nothing to back it
  • "A proven track record of" from someone with one internship
  • "Thrive in a fast-paced environment"
  • "I believe I would be a great fit for your team"

None of these is wrong. They are empty: each one could sit in any applicant’s letter. Every one you cut makes room for a sentence only you could write.

What should you give the AI before it writes?

The draft is only as specific as what you hand over:

  • The full job description, not just the title
  • Your resume, ideally the version you tailored for this job
  • One story with a result: what happened, what you did, what changed
  • One honest sentence about why this company
  • The tone you want: plain, short, first person, half a page

How do you edit an AI draft so it sounds like you?

Go through the draft once with each of these in mind:

  • Cut the first sentence if it says you are applying. They know
  • Replace every adjective about yourself with the evidence for it
  • Delete anything you did not actually do. Models fill gaps confidently
  • Read it aloud. Rewrite any sentence you would never say to a person
  • Keep it to half a page

After

Last spring I rebuilt our club’s sign-up form after half the entries came in unreadable. The next event had a clean list, and I have liked fixing the dull, broken parts of things ever since.

How is a cover letter generator different from a chat app?

A general chat app knows only what you paste in each time, so every letter starts from scratch and leans on whatever it fills in. A cover letter generator built around your profile already has your resume and the posting, and it can keep the letter with the application it belongs to.

QuickCruit writes each letter from the job description, the resume you tailored for it, and what your coach has learned about your story. It writes in your voice, and you edit every line before it goes out. The free plan covers 10 jobs a month, each with a tailored resume and a cover letter, with no credit card.

Asked.Answered.

They can tell when it is generic, which is the usual giveaway. A letter that is specific, true and edited in your voice reads like you, however the first draft was made.

If the application asks, answer honestly. Otherwise, what matters is that every word is true and that you can talk about any line of it in an interview.

QuickCruit’s free plan covers 10 jobs a month, each with a tailored resume and a cover letter written from it. No credit card, and Pro at $20 a month makes letters unlimited.
