Summary
The Vascular Access Specialist (VAS) is responsible for assessment, insertion, and maintenance of PICC lines for patients requiring this specialized form of intravenous access. Responsibilities include coordinating and performing PICC line placements and educating primary care nurses, physicians, patients and families regarding the care and maintenance of PICC lines.
Responsibilities
- Directs the PICC line process and team members, establishing a positive and professional rapport with other departments and staff.
- Maintains and assures data quality in all clinical reporting modules and/or applications, and monitors and reviews monthly PICC line metrics.
- Coordinates and performs line placements, and educates primary care nurses, physicians, patients and families regarding the care and maintenance of PICC lines.
- Maintains a positive professional rapport with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
- Performs on-going data monitoring of the patient; monitoring the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the catheter placement.
- Post insertion management will be provided as needed.
- E nsures delivery of individualized quality patient care consistent with organizational standards and goals.
- Provides care according to established standards of safety, infection control, risk management and quality improvement.
- Works with the case management team around discharge plans ensuring patients maintain continuity of care after discharge.
- Responsibilities also include the completion of tasks assigned by, but not limited to, the lead worker, associate nurse manager, and nurse manager.
- VAS may be responsible for participating in direct patient care of acutely /critically ill patients if the need arises.
- The VAS will maintain all education and competencies related to the care of trauma patients.
Experience
- Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
- At least 2 years of PICC and midline insertion with ultrasound and tip confirmation technology is highly preferred
Education
- Associate's degree in Nursing is required.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.
Credentials
- Valid Florida RN license is required.
- American Heart Association and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
Unit Specific Credential
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity
- AHA Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
