Medical Laboratory Scientist I

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs clinical laboratory tests by standard operating policies and procedures. Understands method principles, performs quality control & calibrations, performs preventive maintenance, and analyzes results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.

• Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing and perform laboratory tests specific to department.
• Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity.
• Communicate test results in a timely manner. Enter and retrieve data from laboratory computer systems.
• Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment.
• Demonstrate appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace, treating patients, their families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity.
• Works alternate shifts as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, phlebotomy.

• Bachelors degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a biological, chemical, or physical science from an accredited institution. Bachelors degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, obtained within or in addition to the degree is also acceptable.
• For non-CLS/MT degrees, one year of experience in a clinical laboratory is required.

• Certification as MLS, BB, C, H or MB by ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying agency.

ECU Health Beaufort Hospital serves as a campus of ECU Health Medical Center. The 142-bed full-service hospital is located in Washington and has earned national designation as a Primary Stroke Center. It is home to a 16-bed emergency department that serves approximately 25,000 patients per year, as well as the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center ¿ a provider of leading-edge chemotherapy and radiation therapy, among other cancer services. ECU Health Beaufort also offers general medical and surgical services, operative services, a women¿s birthing center, rehabilitation services and outpatient clinics.
