At Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS), safety is a core value and a critical component of every project we build. The Project Health and Safety Manager provides leadership, direction, and oversight for all project-specific health and safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.
This position requires extensive travel and relocation to active project sites as needed. Candidates must be willing to work on projects throughout ESS's operating regions, including assignments outside their home state for extended periods of time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of project-specific Health and Safety Management Plans.
- Lead site-specific safety orientations for employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, applicable federal, state, and local requirements, and client-specific safety standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, injuries, and property damage events, completing required reports and recommending preventive measures.
- Support project leadership in creating and maintaining a culture of safety excellence throughout all phases of construction.
- Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and subcontractors to proactively address safety concerns and improve site performance.
- Monitor project safety metrics and trends and provide recommendations to project leadership to achieve company safety goals and objectives.
- Facilitate toolbox talks, pre-task plans, safety meetings, and other employee engagement activities.
- Organize and deliver safety training required by regulatory agencies, clients, and company policy.
- Serve as a liaison with clients, insurance representatives, and regulatory agencies regarding audits, incident investigations, workers' compensation matters, and corrective action plans.
- Mentor and support field supervision and less experienced safety professionals in the application of ESS safety standards and best practices.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation, training records, inspection reports, and compliance records.
- Participate in project planning meetings and provide safety guidance throughout project execution.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental science, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in a safety role, with experience in the construction industry required
- OSHA-30 highly preferred
- BCSP certified preferred
- Strong understanding of safety principles and regulations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience in developing and implementing safety programs
- Experience in conducting safety audits and investigations
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with team members at all levels
- Ability to work both day and night shifts in alignment with crew schedules
