Job Summary

The Assistant Manager of Surgical Services supports the operational, clinical, and administrative oversight of perioperative services, including the operating room, PACU, and sterile processing. This role partners closely with the Surgical Services Manager to ensure safe, efficient, high-quality patient care while supporting staff performance, regulatory compliance, and daily department operations.

Clinical & Operational Support

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of Surgical Services to ensure smooth patient flow, staffing coverage, and efficient use of resources
  • Support implementation and adherence to evidence-based perioperative practices and patient safety standards
  • Serve as a clinical resource and role model for the surgical services staff
  • Assist in managing surgical schedules, case flow, and room utilization

Staff Leadership & Support

  • Support onboarding, orientation, training, and ongoing competency validation of surgical services staff
  • Assist with staff scheduling, staffing adjustments, and coverage needs
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance support in collaboration with the Surgical Services Manager
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Support compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and licensing standards (e.g., DNV, CMS, state regulations)
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives, audits, and performance metrics
  • Participate in the investigation and follow-up of incidents, variances, and patient safety concerns
  • Support infection prevention and sterile processing standards

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist with budget oversight, supply management, and cost-effective resource utilization
  • Support policy and procedure development, updates, and implementation
  • Participate in department meetings, committees, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Assist with data collection, reporting, and operational metrics

Leadership Coverage

  • Serve as acting manager or charge leader as assigned, including off-shift or on-call responsibilities as needed
  • Support emergency preparedness, downtime procedures, and department readiness

Professional Requirements

  • Regulatory Requirements

Required

  • Active RN license (state-specific) or appropriate clinical license for role
  • Preferred 3–5 years of perioperative or surgical services experience
  • Demonstrated leadership, charge, or supervisory experience
  • Strong knowledge of perioperative standards, patient safety, and surgical workflows

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related healthcare field (BSN preferred)
  • Previous management or assistant management experience
  • CNOR or other perioperative certification (preferred or obtained within timeframe)
  • Experience with scheduling software, EHR, and OR information systems
